Longitude is measured from Ferro and the distance scale is measured in Roman miles. The coverage area includes the Niger River, the the northern and eastern part of the Sahara Desert, and the present-day countries of Tunisia, Mauretania, Libya, Algeria, Mali, Chad, Senegal, and Morocco. The ancient names shown on the map include Gaetulia, Numidia, Tripolitana, Nasamones, Salathi, Fortunatae Insulae, Phazania, Nigira Metropolis, Cyrenaica, Atlas Mons, Marmarica, Massasili, Fretum Herculaneum, Arsenaria, Julia Caesariensis, Deserta Libya Interioris, Syrtis Major, and others. The map was engraved by Phineas Eldridge Hamm and is titled Africa, Antigua. The image area measures 18 x 23.7 cm [7” x 9½”], and it was published in Samuel Butler's An Atlas of Antient Geography, by Carey, Lea & Blanchard, Philadelphia, 1836.
