Original Antique 1875 Harper’s Weekly Engraving “WALRUS SHOOTING"

Description: “WALRUS SHOOTING WITH THE HARPOON GUN”, 1875 ORIGINAL ANTIQUE ENGRAVING FOR HARPER’S WEEKLY BY THE BRITISH MARINE ARTIST AND BOOK ILLUSTRATOR WILLIAM HEYSHAM OVEREND (1851-1898) This original antique engraving, published by HARPER’S WEEKLY in October 23, 1875 on page 864, features the intense physical aspects of hunting walruses in the Arctic environment with its towering icebergs and freezing waters. The engraving is by the British marine artist William Heysham Overend. The artist’s initials are engraved in the image lower left: W.H.O. The title line of text in the margin below the image reads: WALRUS-SHOOTING WITH THE HARPOON-GUN. – [See Page 866.]” The engraving is printed on one side of the full sheet size newsprint paper which measures 15 1/2 x 11 inches (vertical). The image size of the engraving measures 9 3/8 x 13 3/8 inches. The back side of the sheet has printed text. The engraving comes unframed. CONDITION: There is evidence of light toning to the sheet front and back as would be expected from newsprint 149 years old, otherwise the engraving is in very fine condition, a crisp clean impression with no evidence of any damage to the image. Harper's Weekly, A Journal of Civilization was an American political magazine based in New York City. Published by Harper & Brothers from 1857 until 1916, it featured foreign and domestic news, fiction, essays on many subjects, and humor, alongside illustrations. It carried extensive coverage of the American Civil War, including many illustrations of events from the war.
