In the foreground is the Newport Harbor Lighthouse (also known as Goat Island Light or Green Light) which is located on the North end of Goat Island in Newport. The lighthouse was built in 1842 and soon after that, a Keeper’s home was added. In 1921, the Keeper’s home was struck by a submarine, demolished, and never replaced. The lighthouse was automated in 1963 and in 1989 it was renovated by the US Coast Guard and placed on the National Register of Historic Places. During the 1970’s, the area between the lighthouse & Goat Island was filled in and a hotel was built on the property. Today, the lighthouse has a fixed Green light with 11 mile visibility and it is maintained by the Friends of Newport Harbor Light. Of course the stunning Claiborne Pell Bridge, also known as the Newport Bridge, is seen in this painting rising majestically over the East Passage of Narragansett Bay. It is a suspension bridge, opened in 1969, to connect the city of Newport on Aquidneck Island, RI and the Town of Jamestown on Conanicut Island, RI. It was named for Rhode Island’s longtime U.S. Senator, Claiborne Pell, who lived in Newport and was well-known nationally for, among other things, having secured government grants for college students (these grants are called Pell Grants in his honor). If you are fortunate enough to have the opportunity to travel to Newport, Rhode Island, it is possible you could see a sunset such as this. William. B. MacGregor Jr. Watercolors Nautical Chart Artist William B. MacGregor, Jr. was born in Medfield, MA, the son and grandson of Norfolk Hunt Club kennel masters. Many of his family members were self taught artists, woodcarvers, automobile mechanics and veterans of foreign wars including his father a WW1 US Army veteran. Bill is a graduate of Medfield High School, Wentworth Institute, and Northeastern University. His engineering career, from which he is now retired, included working for military and aerospace companies in industrial engineering and IR optics. His painting incorporates “old skool” mechanical and civil drafting tools and he uses a mixed medium of watercolors, acrylics and inks. Two rabbits are often in quite a few of his paintings. Look for them. He is frequently commissioned by United States Naval officers to create paintings of their ships and aircraft carriers on nautical charts.
