If Ansel Adams were alive, this is what he would be shooting with, I am sure. There is only one way to describe the 150MP Achromatic, shot with Rodenstock lenses: "Mind boggling". Or "Jaw dropping", perhaps.I have been a Phase One shooter for nearly a decade, having previously owned the XF and different backs, including the IQ3 100MP. I currently shoot with my IQ4 150MP color and XT camera, with Rodenstock lenses.Having owned Leica color and monochrome cameras, I was tempted to buy the IQ4 Achromatic, and it is really fantastic. However, as I learned, this back is an Achromatic, and not a monochrome back. Meaning, it is not just a back with a black and white sensor. It actually captures parts of the Infrared and Ultraviolet spectra. So you have to use specific IR and UV cut off filters to use this back.The IQ4 Achromatic, as was explained to me by someone who was actually involved in the design of this sensor, was originally created to detect extraordinarily minute structural and tonal variations in some super high-precision manufacturing for military / aerospace use, and in addition to its high resolution, it was designed to "see" more than what the human eye could see.So you cannot just change the backs on your camera from a color (e.g., IQ4 150MP) to the Achromatic, maybe slap on a red filter to darken the sky and pop clouds, and shoot. Shooting with the Achromatic requires a good understanding of the IR and UV components inherent in the scene, and choosing the right filters. It will likely require experimenting with 2 or 3 different filters to get the best tonal variations.I have decided that one lifetime is not enough to do justice to both color and the Achromatic. If you shoot with the Achromatic, you have to be really serious about it and put the time and effort into it to get the most out of it. You will be very, very richly rewarded by incredibly stunning images that are simply impossible to produce in any other way. Not even converting IQ4 150MP color images to black and white comes close.I am 68 years old, I have been a color shooter all my life, I own the IQ4 150 MP in color, and I am a hobby photographer, not a commercial photographer who gets paid. I'm too old to reprogram my brain now, and I just don't have the hours in the day to learn yet another skill and become proficient at it. Also, my travels are now becoming less frequent, and when I travel, I want to take color photos also. I can't lug as much weight as I used to in the past, and it is not practical for me to carry both my IQ4 150 color and the Achromatic.So for all of the above reasons, very, very reluctantly, I have decided to part with my IQ4 150 Achromatic.I bought the back from one of the top (perhaps the top) Phase One dealer in the USA, who is a class act, and will be happy to provide any needed service to the new owner. The back arrived with some 20+ shots already on it. I have taken about a dozen shots, maybe even fewer, all in my living room. The total capture count stands at only 39. The back is pretty much as brand new. It comes with its sensor cover plate, two batteries and Pelican case that form-fitted foam for an XT camera and back, two spare batteries and an additional Rodenstock lens. The back came with the standard Phase One 5-year warranty, and has approximately 4.5 years left in it.
