New 5x7 Space Photo: Hubble Telescope Image of the Eskimo Nebula, a Dying Star

Description: victoria heilshorn studio - the best in History Title - Hubble Image of Eskimo Nebula, a Dying Star Description - In its first glimpse of the heavens following the successful December 1999 servicing mission, NASA's Hubble Space Telescope captured a majestic view of a planetary nebula, the glowing remains of a dying, Sun-like star. This stellar relic, first spied by William Herschel in 1787, is nicknamed the "Eskimo" Nebula (NGC 2392) because, when viewed through ground-based telescopes, it resembles a face surrounded by a fur parka. In this Hubble telescope image, the "parka" is really a disk of material embellished with a ring of comet-shaped objects, with their tails streaming away from the central, dying star. The Eskimo's "face" also contains some fascinating details. Although this bright central region resembles a ball of twine, it is, in reality, a bubble of material being blown into space by the central star's intense "wind" of high-speed material. In this photo, one bubble lies in front of the other, obscuring part of the second lobe. Scientists believe that a ring of dense material around the star's equator, ejected during its red giant phase, created the nebula's shape. The bubbles are not smooth like balloons but have filaments of denser matter. Each bubble is about 1 light-year long and about half a light-year wide. Scientists are still puzzled about the origin of the comet-shaped features in the "parka." One possible explanation is that these objects formed from a collision of slow-and fast-moving gases. The Eskimo Nebula is about 5,000 light-years from Earth in the constellation Gemini. The picture was taken Jan. 10 and 11, 2000, with the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2. The nebula's glowing gases produce the colors in this image: nitrogen (red), hydrogen (green), oxygen (blue), and helium (violet). We strive to make our photo descriptions as accurate as possible. Descriptions are taken directly from the U.S. Library of Congress, National Archives, or other sources as noted. In many cases, these institutions hold the original negatives and state the ascribed notes directly from the original photographer. Therefore, we use these institutions as our standard of authority on description accuracy. We are not responsible for errors and we will not participate in disputes. Should you have a dispute, please contact the sighted source directly. This listing provides buyers with the opportunity to review the image and agree with the item description before finalizing a purchase. As such, no refunds will be issued on the basis of an allegedly inaccurate description. We encourage you to feel comfortable with the stated description before ordering. When can I expect my package? Items are delivered via USPS First Class mail (2-5 business days) with no longer than one (1) day handling time. Your item should not be considered untimely unless it has not been received after one full week from your payment date (within the United States). Please consider weekends and holidays when anticipating your package arrival date as well. Standard international delivery times vary depending on location. While First Class International usually delivers within 7-14 business days, it offers no guarantee on delivery times and may take up to a month (usually due to customs issues). Please take this into consideration if you are outside the United States and are placing a time-sensitive order. Tracking is not available on standard international shipments. Expedited international shipping is available and includes tracking service. International expedited shipping delivers in approximately 7 business days. Is your transit packaging secure? Great care will be taken to ensure that your item arrives in excellent condition. Prints are shipped flat on cardboard and sealed in a water-resistant envelope or, for posters and maps, rolled in a crush-resistant tube. We've successfully shipped thousands of prints in this manner, which demonstrates a reliability in our packaging methods. Items will arrive in good order when handled properly by postal carriers. Please note that we pay extra charges to have parcels delivered as PACKAGES, not regular mail. This means your carrier should deliver your package to your doorstep (not bend or cram it into your mailbox). Should you find your package damaged due to this type of handling, please contact your local post office. How long do I have to pay? Payment is expected within (7) seven days. If payment is not received by the eighth day after purchase, we will initiate an unpaid item case. We pay fees on all items sold through eBay and this process is the only way to reverse fees incured by unpaid transactions. Should a payment issue arise, please don't hesitate to contact us. We're happy to work with you! What is your return policy? We will happily exchange any defective or problematic merchandise. However, cash refunds are not allowed, as your bid is a commitment to buy according to eBay policy. The nature of our merchandise also compells us to protect against being treated as a lending library. Therefore, please be confident of desire for our items before placing your order. We ask that you contact us with any potential issue before leaving negative feedback, as we are committed to your 100% satisfaction and feel any problem can be easily resolved. victoria heilshorn studio You may be whatever you resolve to be. -- Thomas J.
