Description: RailroadTreasures offers the following item: Narrow Gauge In The Rockies By Lucius Beebe & Charles Clegg w/DJ Narrow Gauge In The Rockies By Lucius Beebe Hard Cover with dust Jacket Copyright 1958 SIXTH PRINTING 1970 224 Pages 250 photographs, equipment drawings for the model maker, 3 full color paintings by Howard Fogg, endpaper map by Frederic Shaw. This is the story of the three-foot cars and engines on which an entire generation of the Colorado Frontier rode to golden destinies of riches and romance. It is augmented by a matchless album of photographs by the masters in this field, and told by these authors whose appreciation of this dramatic period of Western growth has no equal. No other chapter in the gorgeous saga of railroading is so heavily freighted with the old West as the narrow gauges, the powerful Denver & Rio Grande, the wistfully remembered South Park, and the incredible mountain carriers built by Otto Mears to achieve mining camps and remote diggings impervious to the standard operations of mainline railroads. In no part of the United States of the nineteenth century and the expanding frontier was the entire economy of a region so closely integrated to the operations, at once primitive and luxurious, of an interlocking system of railroads of such emphatic character and possessed of such atmospheric overtones. Here in diminutive scale were all the luxuries of overland travel, mahogany paneled sleepers, dining cars whose breakfast menus boasted hock and champagne, three-foot private cars where II. A. W. Tabor and President Ulysses S. Grant played poker for towering stacks of minted double eagles. Here were name trains with titles as proud as those of The Overland Limited or Broadway: the Shavano, the San Juan, the Silver-ton train, and the Chili run to the old pueblo of Santa Fe. "Narrow Gauge in the Rockies" is the tale too of swaggering nabobs who peopled the rococo hotels and barrooms of Central City, Silverton and Gunnison, of the Carbonate Kings of Leadville and of the remote and desolate bonanzas at Telluride, Red Mountain, Creede and Ophir.
