Nakamichi 610 Preamplifier, including Dust Cover & Operating Manual

Description: Nakamichi 610 Control Preamp, including Dust Cover and Operating manual I purchased this unit back in the late 70's and used it until the mid 90's. it's been stored in my closet ever since. Preamp was working fine, but I replaced it with a Harmon Kardon Signature 2.0 Audio Video processor preamp since Video was starting to become part of the home environment. Given its ability to act as a mixer, I set it up recently to capture and mix down some records and old tapes... doing that reminded me how good this preamp really was.. especially the phono stages.. very clean and detailed. That said, I no longer have a use for it and figured it's time to find a new home and let someone else to enjoy this classic preamp. It is a solidly built unit with loads of flexibility. Review the photos to get a sense of its cosmetic condition. As you'll see some of the lettering has worn off and there are some minor scratches, both on the face plate and the accompanying dust cover. Audio wise, there was some minor raspiness to the potentiometers when I first turned it on, but that has gone away with use. All the buttons have positive engagement, the tone generators work, VU meters light up and function smoothly, and both phono stages seem just fine. The one issue I found was on tape input 1. the right input was intermittent and required you to jiggle the connector for it to hold signal. Unfortunately, that is no longer the case, even when you move the connector around, you can't recover the signal. My guess is the female connector on the chassis disconnected / went bad and needs to be replaced. I say this because there was no apparent distortion when the signal was present, so it didn't seem like a component was failing.. but that's just my guess. THE GOOD NEWS is that this unit can handle 3 tape decks and those other 2 positions work just fine. I haven't checked every input or possible combination of mixing scenario, but I can tell you it was working when initially put away, stored in a smoke free home, and performed as stated when recently hooked up. That said, and as anyone who knows vintage electronics, capacitors do age or other components might fail and need replacing, so it is being sold as is, no return. Below are some specs and commentary on the unit I captured from the Hifiengine.com web site.... The Nakamichi 610 was created to fill an often expressed gap in the consumer audio market. It is a remarkably flexible control center that must be considered truly unique by any standard. It's uniqueness stems not only from its amazing features, but from its even more amazing performance as well. It does, after all, carry the Nakamichi brand name. To some audiophiles, no more need be said. But there is more - much more.First and foremost, the Nakamichi 610 is a state-of-the-art preamplifier. This much overused phrase can certainly be applied to a preamplifier with noise level so close to the theoretical limit and distortion so low that these parameters can barely be measured with today's best available test equipment. Specifications only begin to tell the story.Secondly, the Nakamichi 610 is a relatively sophisticated test instrument. Built-in test tone oscillators, pink noise generator, phase checkers and precision dB meters, just to name a few, make the 610 an invaluable tool in the calibration, alignment and evaluation of stereo system components.Special switching features facilitate the A/B comparison of phono cartridges, tape decks, power amplifiers, loudspeakers, etc.Last, but not least, the Nakamichi 610 is a mixing console. It allows 5 in/2 out mixing of any of 19 different inputs. This includes 5 wide-dynamic-range microphone inputs. One can, for example, mix two tape decks (stereo, of course) plus center channel voice onto a third tape deck, or two phonographs plus voice, or any combination of these sources. Live recording takes on a new dimension with the 610: with two left, two right and one blend microphone inputs the live recordist can produce some very professional results. The Nakamichi 610, in short, will become a must for the serious audiophile. Even the audiophile who has everything will wonder how he ever managed to do without the 610.SpecificationsFrequency response: 20Hz to 100kHzTotal harmonic distortion: 0.005%Input sensitivity: 0.2mV (mic), 1mV (MM), 75mV (line)Signal to noise ratio: 53dB (mic), 80dB (MM), 85dB (line)Output: 316mV (line), 1V (Pre out)Semiconductors: 2 x FET, 134 x transistors, 27 x diodes, 5 x zener diodes, 2 x ICDimensions: 400 x 170 x 237mmWeight: 7kg
