Description: This is a breathtaking, museum-quality, 1938 Schwinn Paramount track bike. It was professionally restored by Waterford Precision Cycles around 2008, including bright red paint, white box pinstriping, and reproduction decals, all as original. The serial number stamped on the bottom bracket is very hard to read, but Waterford recorded it in their records as A138 (and they might have been able to see it before they painted it better than I can). I purchased the frame and some of the parts in a package deal from Bikeville in Philadelphia, PA, in 2010. It has not been ridden since restoration, and has been stored indoors under climate-controlled conditions. It is in excellent condition. Following is a point-by-point rundown of the bike's features: Paint: full Waterford refinish in bright red, including reproduction decals and white box striping Decals: original style as part of Waterford restoration Headbadge: Schwinn Paramount Frame design: ball-end stays (typical of Oscar Wastyn-built pre-war Paramounts) Lugs: keyhole lugs; BB lugs have no keyhole cut-outs; head lugs are ovalized (typical of 1938 Paramounts) Headset: complete, original integral-style Schwinn Paramount with re-chromed lock nut Bottom bracket: oiler port in bottom bracket with oiler; stamped on bottom with "A138" but hard to read Fork: standard Schwinn Paramount style; with flat top crown (having no chamfer on outer top surfaces) (flat top crown was typical of 1938 Paramounts) Frame condition: excellent; no dents, dings, chips, or scratches, except one small paint chip right under the upper headset adjustable cup Frame size: seat-tube 21" center-to-top; top tube 22-1/2" center-to-center Drilling: fork is drilled for front handbrake; rear bridge is not drilled Seatpost: re-chromed "Schwinn" script Seatpost bolt: chrome "AS" with nut and flat washer Saddle: period-correct Brooks B17 "Champion Sprinter" (a true sprint saddle that is only 4-1/2" wide at rear); purchased by me directly from the UK Saddle clamp: Brooks chrome Cranks: re-chromed Schwinn "PARAMOUNT" steel Chainwheel: chrome-plated Schwinn 24T, 1-inch pitch Chain: 1-inch pitch block Cog: 8-teeth 1 in. pitch Chain adjusters: original Schwinn Pedals: re-chromed original Clips: Brooks reproduction vintage style Straps: Brooks reproduction vintage style Stem: re-chromed Schwinn Paramount adjustable track stem (this particular stem has a nice downward slope fir a great "track look," a feature not found in all of these Paramount stems) Bars: chrome-plated steel with a deep flowing track bend with rare reproductions of original Paramount racing grips (4-piece, as seen in 1938 Schwinn Paramount catalog) Hubs: Schwinn Paramount "telephone dial" high flange 36-spoke with excellent chrome-plated spindles with excellent lug nuts Spokes: 36 butted stainless steel per wheel, tied and soldered in "old school" fashion (for extra stiffness for sprinting on the track) Nipples: stainless Rims: original Lobdell wooden Tires: Clement Futuro 700C "sew-ups" with tan sidewalls, glued onto the rims; these tires are probably in the 12-16 oz. weight range per tire Bike will be disassembled, as needed, and carefully packed in a bike box with foam insulation (held in place with plastic ties) to protect the frame members and components.
