PRIME MINISTER MOSHE SHARETT (ISRAEL) - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 10/02/1960 - HFSID 76145 SHARETT WRITES TO BEN-GURION ABOUT THE LAVON AFFAIR! MOSHE SHARETT. Important ALS: "M. Sharett", 2p, front and verso, 6½x9½. Jerusalem, 1960 October 2. To Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion. In Hebrew, fully translated. In part: "It was Lavon's request that it be determined that, contrary to the claim of Gibli, that he (Lavon) did not give orders to carry out a certain operation in Egypt, it is, therefore understood that this request was incorporated into the scope of either moral or legal, to transmitting to the Prime Minister or to the Minister or Defense a record of the exchange of view between me, as Prime Minister, and Lavon as Minister of Defense in 1955, while it is true that at the same time that the discussion dealt with the Cairo affair, actually totally unrelated to that matter although one cannot deny that there was a connection between the two seemingly unrelated matters...." The word "Copy" has been written by Sharett on top indicating this must have been the final draft of the letter (probably typed) sent to BEN-GURION. MOSHE SHARETT was Israel's first Foreign Minister (1948-1956) and served as Prime Minister of Israel from 1953-1955, sandwiched between Prime Minister Ben-Gurion's terms (1948-1953, 1955-1963). The "Lavon Affair" was a failed intelligence operation launched by Israeli Minister of Defense PINCHAS LAVON in 1954 without Prime Minister Sharett's knowledge. Its aim was to strain U.S.-Egyptian relations. Pinchas Lavon resigned from the post of Defense Minister on January 2, 1955 and Ben-Gurion returned to the government as Minister of Defense. BINYAMIN GIBLI, the Director of Military Intelligence, was replaced as well. Following the 1955 elections, Sharett yielded the post of Prime Minister but remained Foreign Minister, a post he had held since Israeli independence, until 1956. Paper clip stain and file note (unknown hand) at upper right. Fine condition.
