Description: HARVEY COMICS Part of the SASQUATCH Halloween Collection 2024! "Monster In My Pocket"Newly Optioned by actor Will Smith for TV/Streaming Development!First Appearance (in comics) and Origin of the Matchbox "Monsters"If you were young during the late 1980's and into the 1990's, then it's likely you were one of the kids who loved telling their buddy or the girl next door that they had a "Monster in my Pocket." But anyone else who wasn't going through elementary school or junior high at the time might not understand exactly what you meant. So, we figured we'd clarify. Simply put, "Monster In My Pocket" was a toy brand launched in 1989 by former Mattel execs Joe Morrison and John Weems. Similar to the little green plastic Army Men that have captivated kids, mostly boys, for decades, Monster In My Pocket were little red, yellow, green or purple plastic Monsters, each one inspired by monsters of classic film, literature, folklore, fairy tales, legend, myth, cryptozoology, Halloween and pop culture. MATCHBOX TOYS, the toy company famous for its toy car lines dating back to the 1960's, manufactured the Monsters, and the first series hit shelves in 1990, delivering 48 different creatures for young collectors. Available individually, in pairs and sometimes larger sets, each little Monster had a "points value" on its base, numbers which represented the Monster's relative power and the scarcity of the particular figurine. Examples of Series One Monsters included: Werewolf, Hydra, Tyrannosaurus Rex, Bigfoot, Baba Yaga and Zombie. In time, over 200 unique figurines joined the toy line. Monster In My Pocket received an ABC TV animated special and inspired a Nintendo NES Video Game, a board game, and a four-issue limited comic book series published by HARVEY COMICS in 1991. In keeping with the precedent established in the early 1980's by Hasbro and Marvel Comics for GI JOE A Real American Hero, the media presentations of the toy line were to create the "story" of its characters -- and, overall, they did. The story was simple: Monsters get shrunk. Good Monsters hang with kids and fight the Bad Monsters. The 48 original Monsters were the characters of all the stories; the later releases, of which there were over 150, were left to kids' imaginations. Westbrook Studios, the production company owned by Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, was reported by Deadline on December 7th, 2023, to have picked up the rights to Monster In My Pocket with the intention of turning the property into a live-action series. With the 200 monsters in Matchbox's catalog and the current -- and growing -- popularity of the horror / monster genre as evidenced by Legendary Pictures' "Monster-Verse," Godzilla films, and even the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the time just might be very right for kids of all ages to find Monsters in their pockets once again. If you're a monster fan -- and especially if you're a Monster (In My Pocket) fan or even a former collector of the little creatures -- then the premiere issue of Harvey Comics' comic book series is exactly what you and your collection both deserve. We've been checking out the other Monster In My Pocket #1 (1991) listings here on eBay, and if you're in the market for a raw copy, this one from our stash is the nicest one around. While the superhero comics from Marvel and DC had readers of various ages, Harvey Comics were always directed solely at kids, making high-grade copies of Monster In My Pocket a lot harder to find today than the average Spider-Man or Batman comic from the same era. We think you'll be very pleased with the issue available here. So give your collection what it deserves today... and look forward to the live-action series on its way from the former Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
