Description: This vibrant marine oil painting depicts the SS. President Wilson departing Japan with an image of Mt. Fuji in the background. It was painted by noted Japanese artist Kanji Sato. The President Wilson was a passenger ship originally ordered by the United States Marine Commission during WWII as an Admiral W. S. Benson-class Type 2 - SE2 - R1 transport ship. It was intended as a troop ship to be named the USSAdmiral F. B. Upham but she launched just after the war ended. In 1948 the ship was put into service for the American President Line. The ship remained in service for the shipping company 1973. She was then sold to Oceanic Cruise Development and renamed "Oriental Empress". In 1976 the ship was laid up in Hong Kong and was scrapped in Taiwan in 1974. In the course of her service in1964 she was involved in the successful rescue of the crew form the sinking Greek cargo ship Agia Erini. During its time with the APL the President Wilson operated on the Pacific Ocean route travelling from San Francisco to Los Angeles, Hawaii, the Philippines, China and Japan. I think our photo shows her returning from Japan to the U.S. The painting is 12.5" x 16". Other ten a small repaired hole in the sky, the painting is in excellent condition. I believe it was painted c. 1965. Stock number SA2D-178
