MARLENE DIETRICH - AUTOGRAPH CO-SIGNED BY: JUNE LANG, BASIL RATHBONE - HFSID 145265 MARLENE DIETRICH, COSIGNED BY: BASIL RATHBONE, JUNE LANG Small sheet of paper signed "God bless you!" by leading lady Marlene Dietrich, by leading man Basil Rathbone and by dancer-turned-actress June Lang. Signatures: "God bless you!/Marlene Dietrich" in black ink, "Basil Rathbone" in pencil and "June Lang" in black ink. 3¼x4.DIETRICH (1901-1992, born Maria Magdalena Dietrich in Schöneberg bei Berlin, Germany) was already known in Europe as a singer and live performer when she achieved film stardom in two 1930 releases: The Blue Angel and Morocco (Academy Award nomination for Best Actress). Paramount's answer to MGM's Greta Garbo, Dietrich was for a time in the 1930s the world's most highly paid actress. Her films were later banned by the Nazis in her native Germany, and she played a key role in U.S. wartime efforts, singing her hit Lilli Marlene on many USO tours. RATHBONE (1892-1967, born Philip St. John Basil Rathbone in Johannesburg, South Africa), who appeared on Broadway 23 times and won the 1948 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play (The Heiress), is also known for his film work in period costume dramas. He was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor for playing Tybalt in Romeo and Juliet (1936) and King Louis XVI in If I Were King (1938). Rathbone also appeared as Murdstone in David Copperfield (1934), Evremonde in Tale of Two Cities (1935), Pontius Pilate in The Last Days of Pompeii (1936), Karenin in Anna Karenina (1936) and Guy of Gisbourne in The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938). In 1939, he was cast as Sherlock Holmes in The Hound of the Baskervilles, the first of 14 screen appearances as Conan Doyle's master detective. Rathbone also played Holmes on radio from 1939 to 1946. Dancer turned actress LANG (1915-2005, born Winifred June Vlasek in Minneapolis, Minnesota), who began her movie career at age 14, appeared with Laurel and Hardy in Bonnie Scotland (1935), with Warner Baxter and Fredric March in The Road to Glory (1936) and was Shirley Temple's mother in Wee Willie Winkie (1937). After her marriage to convicted mobster John Rosselli, Lang's career spiraled downward, and by 1943, she was playing unbilled bits in films like Flesh and Fantasy (1943) and Up in Arms (1944). Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Rathbone's signature touches Dietrich's and Lang's signatures. Signatures were cut from a larger sheet at right and bottom edge, which are irregular. Folded three times and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
