Description: Makonde Shetani sculpture. Spectacular Shetani (demon) sculpture featuring a mythological female figure carrying a calabash, while being approached by a snake, in a most compromising way. Notice the humorous facial expression, and expressive body position. This stunning and original sculpture, not to be confused with the more common Makonde "Tree of Life" sculptures, has been in my family's possession since 1970, at which time it was purchased directly from an importer of African art. I inherited several of these carvings, and am not able to keep all of them. It stands 17.5" (44.5cm) tall, and was carved in the 1960s, or earlier, from African Blackwood.
