Description: "Between Thought and Expression: Selected Lyrics of Lou Reed," rare Czech-English edition hardback. Purchased in Prague in 1997 and carefully stored ever since, this first-edition hardback book is a rare find for anyone interested in Lou Reed, the Velvet Underground, lyrics, Eastern European culture, or collectible books. The book is so "like new" that it still has the heavy-paper "wrapper" identifying it as the Czech-English edition, published in Prague and not released in the United States. Author: Text and lyrics by Lou Reed, translated to Czech by Alexandr Neuman Publisher: Published in Prague by MATA in arrangement with HyperionPublication date: 1997Pages: 428 Condition: FINE - LIKE NEW - MINT (however you describe it, it looks like it did 25 years ago) This book has particular cultural significance because of the special bond between Lou Reed and President Vaclav Havel and the Czech people. In a chapter titled "To Do the Right Thing," Reed writes about his 1990 trip to Czechoslovakia to interview Havel, who had recently been elected president. The visit was just a few months after the country was freed from Soviet rule. In the interview, Havel talks about the influence of the Velvet Underground's music during Communism:"At the end of the '60s there was a wave here of rock music....Most of the bands after the Soviet invasion broke up or started playing different music because good rock music was actually banned. There was one band in particular which lasted...and their style of music was much influenced by the Velvet Underground, whose record I brought back from New York in 1968. Underground music, in particular one record by the Velvet Underground, played a rather significant role in the development in our country." Reed then describes the experience of performing in a small club for Havel and few hundred other people. Before Havel left, he gave Reed "a small black book about the size of a diary." It contained handwritten lyrics translated into Czechoslovakian. Havel said only 200 existed, and some people had gone to jail for owning one. The next year Reed would publish the English version of "Between Thought and Expression," and five years later it was translated and published as this Czech-English version. I also have the first-edition paperback English version (1991), which by comparison is only 182 pages, less than half the size of the Czech version. I've been selling on eBay since 1999 and have a 100% positive feedback rating. Please let me know if you have any questions or would like additional details.
