The re-designed American Eagle Silver Proof Coin has a new reverse (tails) depicting an eagle coming in for a landing, carrying an oak branch as if to add it to a nest. Weinman’s full-length figure of Liberty in full stride, enveloped in folds of the flag, with her right hand extended and branches of laurel and oak in her left. The United States Mint returned to its original historical assets to render a closer reflection of Weinman’s original vision and includes the addition of his traditional artist mark. The pilot looks upward with pride and confidence as two P-51 Mustangs pass overhead. The inscription “THEY FOUGHT TWO WARS” is arced across the top as a reference to the dual battles the Tuskegee Airmen fought— fascism abroad and racial discrimination at home.
