The painting is signed in the lower left, and appears to be dated 1886. The painting measures 41" x 29", and the outer dimensions of the frame are 47.5" x 29". The painting features Kahler's most beloved subject, an Angora kitten, sitting on fine fabrics, and apparently looking at his image in a glass of champagne. This piece has been professionally restored, cleaned, and relined. The restoration is well done, and is only visible upon close inspection in glazing light. Under black light there are a few areas of in-painting scattered throughout. There is a thin layer of varnish on the back curtain and the shadows on the lower half of the canvas, likely to stabilize the paint. The piece presents beautifully, and is immediately ready for hanging. The giltwood frame is also on excellent condition, complete, and free of losses. Carl Kahler was born in 1855 in Linz, Austria. He studied at the Munich Academy, as well as in Paris. During the 1880's he was very well known in Germany and Austria. As an itinerant artist, in 1886 Kahler sailed to Australia, where his works were very well received and in demand. While there, he was awarded the commission for four paintings of the Melbourne Cup (racing event) and others in New Zealand. Upon initially moving to New York (1890), and, briefly after, to San Francisco (1891), Kahler opened a studio, where he specialized in figure painting. The local press called him "an erratic genius" who asked enormous prices for his works, and would often destroy a painting if he was unhappy with it, or if he thought it would sell for less than he felt it was worth.Kahler was a member of the Society of Independent Artists. He exhibited in Berlin (1880), Dresden, Munich, Vienna, San Francisco (1892-1902), at the World's Columbian Expo (Chicago, 1893), etc. His works are rare. It is known that Kahler lived in 1921-26 in New York; his track is then lost.
