Description: Large, Early Marvin Bailey Crystalline Vase, South Carolina, c. 2001–2003 This gorgeous handthrown studio pottery vase was made by Marvin Bailey, South Carolina, in the period from 2001 to 2003. It's a very early work, from the beginnings of his career. He's since moved on to the more folk art style--particularly face jugs--that he's very well known for today. Bulbous shouldered form with a wide flaring neck extending from the top. The decoration features an overall lavender ground, with crystalline bursts, and an overall very finely controlled crazing. An ultra-glossy--almost glass-like--finish. The interior is glazed in a very deep maroon, almost black. This vase has a lot of presence, and a very subtle effect. This is in excellent original condition, with no chips, cracks or other damage. Inscribed on the base "Marvin Bailey". Dimensions: 9" high x 6-5/8" in diameter (at the widest); the rim is 4-1/2" in diameter; the base is 2-3/8" in diameter.
