The second in the Hannoverian line of British monarchs, GEORGE II (b. 1683) reigned from 1727-1760. He was the last British king to command troops in the field, a victory over the French at Dettingen in 1743. George II's reign did much to consolidate the practice of constitutional monarchy: a king deferring to a Cabinet responsible to Parliament. He also presided over victories against France in India and North America, and also the defeat at Culloden (1745) of the last Jacobite rebellion (on behalf of the former Stuart rulers). Sir William YONGE (1693-1755), first elected to the British House of Commons in 1722, rose through the patronage of Whig and governmental leader Robert Walpole to important government posts, including in 1735 Secretary of War. He was promoted despite the dislike of King George II, who called him "stinking Yonge". Yonge was also a poet and comic opera lyricist. Lightly soiled. Paper separation (¼-inch).
