In a patriotic salute to five of the nation's top stars, cultural and political luminaries spent a wintry weekend here celebrating the 26th annual Kennedy Center Honors. This year's Kennedy Center honorees include James Brown, Loretta Lynn, Carol Burnett, Itzhak Perlman and Mike Nichols. Receiving America's most prestigious lifetime achievement award for the performing arts were the "Godfather of Soul," James Brown, 70; funny lady Carol Burnett, 70; country music legend Loretta Lynn, 68; director Mike Nichols, 72; and violin virtuoso Itzhak Perlman, 58. The weekend culminated Sunday in a grand finale in which a variety of performers, from celebrities to young violinists to members of the military, shared the stage to perform Brown's funky 1985 hit, Living in America. President Bush and his wife, Laura, sat with the honorees in the VIP box. Bush's father, former president George Bush, lauded Lynn as "an American original" who "would have made one heck of a politician." His son, he joked, is "a couple of quarts low on musical talent." Perlman, who was stricken with polio at age 4, "has never considered himself disabled," violinist and conductor Pinchas Zukerman told the audience of about 1,900. "And he has never let anyone else think of him that way." Rapper LL Cool J said Brown "made it possible for me, a black kid from Queens, to stand in front of a president and say, 'I'm black and I'm proud.' " Singer/actress Julie Andrews called longtime chum Burnett, who lived on welfare as a child and was raised by her grandmother, a "national treasure" who "is courageous in her work and in her private life." Meryl Streep spoke about Nichols and said, "Mike, you have taken so many of us so many times on so many wonderful journeys." The actress co-stars in the Nichols-directed Angels in America, which premiered Sunday on HBO. (Nichols called the timing a "weird" coincidence.) For the first time in 23 years, Walter Cronkite did not host the event, so Caroline Kennedy filled in. "I'm here because the most trusted man in America has laryngitis," she said, "and that's the way it is." At a more intimate gathering Saturday, Secretary of State Colin Powell drew applause when he acknowledged the service of U.S. soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. At the State Department dinner, Powell also noted that, in classic American form, each honoree "has struggled to overcome obstacles, be they emotional, financial or physical." Brown, for example, overcame a childhood of poverty to become a Grammy winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer. Powell said Brown's music lifted the spirits of the troops during the Vietnam War, and Candice Bergen said Brown provided the "soundtrack for civil rights" in the '60s. Nichols, who fled Nazi Germany at age 7 for New York, has a unique perspective on the USA, said his wife, ABC's Diane Sawyer. "His ear for America is in many ways the immigrant ear." In a toast at the dinner, Garth Brooks praised Lynn for staying true to her roots in rural Kentucky. "You connect with all walks of life and never once turned your back on the path from which you came," he told her. So how does it feel to be honored? "I feel good," Brown said Saturday. Burnett, no stranger to awards, said this honor is "very classy" because honorees get to sit back and enjoy the adulation. "You don't have to sing for your supper. You sit, you smile, you wave and you weep."
