Description: JULIAN CANNONBALL ADDERLEY Description Scarce and highly collectible original first printing concert poster advertising the Cannonball Adderley Quintet at the Centre Culturel d’Uccle in Brussels [Belgium] on Wednesday, 26th March, 1969, presented by Marc Danval. Besides the leader himself, the Quintet at the time featured cornetist Nat Adderley, pianist Joe Zawinul, bassist Victor Gaskin, and drummer Roy McGurdy. One of Cannonball’s most famous albums, Mercy, Mercy, Mercy! Live at the Club (1966) was recorded with this line-up and received the Grammy Award for the best instrumental jazz performance in 1967. The Spring 1969 European tour was Gaskin’s last tour with Cannonball and by the end of the year, he was replaced by Walter Booker. By the end of the 1960s, Adderley’s playing began to reflect the influence of electric jazz. In this period, he released albums such as Accent on Africa (1968) and The Price You Got to Pay to Be Free (1970). Also in 1970, his quintet appeared at the Monterey Jazz Festival, and a brief scene of that performance was featured in the 1971 psychological thriller Play Misty for Me, starring Clint Eastwood. Adderley died on 8th August, 1975, at the age of 46, after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage while performing in Gary, Indiana. That same year he was inducted into the Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame. He is buried in Tallahassee at the Southside Cemetery.
