Lieutenant General John MacDonald (d. 1850) was a British officer who served as Adjutant-General to the Forces. Commissioned into the 89th Regiment of the Foot in April 1795, soon moving to the rank of lieutenant, he served with the 89th during the Irish Rebellion of 1798; the regiment also served in Minorca, Heasina, the blockade of Malta, the capture of Valetta, and the 1801 campaign in Egypt during the Napoleonic Wars. Another promotion to brigade-major in 1805, he served as military to William Cathcart during his command of the king's German legion in Swedish Pmerania and during the expedition to Copenhagenin in 1807. MacDonald held many ranks and positions throughout the next thirty years. He was a trusted aide to the Duke of Wellington, and he eventually rose to be Deputy Adjutant-General before being promoted Adjutant-General in July 1830; he shared Wellington's conservative attitude and supported his efforts to retain flogging as a method of discipline. He was awarded a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Bath in 1847. Normal mailing folds. Toned. Creased throughout. Corners creased. Stained throughout. Otherwise, fine condition.
