James Carraway LP SIGNED INSCRIBED to Chaplain of Bourbon Street Bob Harrington!

Description: Up for sale is a vintage gospel LP (12 inch, 33 RPM, vinyl) featuring the considerable talents of a famous baritone evangelist. This is a rare LP to begin with. But the copy I am selling also has a GREAT PROVENANCE! It was SIGNED AND INSCRIBED by the artist (James Carraway, known as "The Singing Engineer") and presented to none other than Bob Harrington, who was known as "The Chaplain of Bourbon Street", in New Orleans, Louisiana. This is a unique and most collectible item! Born in Sarepta, Louisiana in 1923, Dr. Rev. James W. Carraway served in the US Army Air Corps during World War II. He then became a locomotive engineer for the Kansas City Southern and Louisiana and Arkansas Railway. Carraway traveled for many years with the Billy Graham Evangelical Association. He entered the Baptist ministry, obtained a Doctor of Divinity, and had his own radio and television ministry. At one time, he sang with the Minden Quartet. He was a much sought after revival singer. He died in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania in 2008. LITTLE KNOWN FACT: Carraway was the maternal uncle of famed country music singer and actor Trace Adkins! Adkins has been quoted as saying: "Uncle John played boogie woogie piano at all of our family gatherings and Mama and all my aunts sang in the choir..." (Source of the quote is the website of "Trace Bio Page".) Bob Harrington was born in 1927 in Sweet Water, Alabama. He had a religious conversion in at age 30 and became an itinerant evangelist through the South. In 1960, he moved to the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary where he served as assistant pastor of the First Baptist Church. Harrington began a street ministry on the notorious Bourbon Street, in the heart of the French Quarter. Later, he opened a brick and mortar chapel there while continuing to witness and preach in the bars and strip clubs. In 1963, New Orleans Mayor Victor Schiro proclaimed him to be "The Chaplain of Bourbon Street". Harrington became a national celebrity, appearing on the Merv Griffin Show, the Phil Donahue Show, and the Tonight Show. His series of debates with famed atheist and civil libertarian Madalyn Murray O'Hair were widely followed. Harrington also wrote several books and released record albums of his own, at least two of which went "gold". But he encountered hard times in the late 1970s with a divorce, the closure of his Bourbon Street ministry, and bankruptcy. He later explained: "The devil threw me a pass and I caught it and ran for defeat." His backsliding continued until the late 1990s when, through the efforts of Rex Humbard and others, he finally returned to his faith. He remarried and moved to Texas where he resumed preaching. The December 25, 1965 edition of Billboard Magazine announced the release of the Zondervan mono recording (ZLP-684). I assume that Americana stereo release may have been a few years later. James Carraway's signature and inscription are undated, but I assume that they date from the period of Bob Harrington's peak stature as "The Chaplain of Bourbon Street".
