This copy is one of a limited number of first editions produced for Booth's. In 1930 when The Savoy Cocktail Book was published, Booth's was one of the biggest gin brands in the world, and its chairman was Lord Lurgan, also chairman of the Ritz Hotel. With centuries of distilling history, Booth's played an important role in the fortunes of gin from its humble beginnings in 18th century, to the Cocktail Age of the 1920s, and its immense popularity thereafter. Booth's is the only gin brand mentioned in The Savoy Cocktail Book, appearing in the "Booksellers' (Special) Pride" in the "Additional Cocktails" section. This scarce book is a Jazz Age masterpiece of mixology, book design, advertising, and branding. It contains recipes for over 700 cocktails, accompanied by artist Gilbert Rumbold's amusing and charming illustrations throughout. An English bartender working in the United States, Harry Craddock returned to Britain at the onset of the Prohibition Era, where he took a job at the American Bar in London's Savoy Hotel in 1920. While working there, he compiled The Savoy Cocktail Book. Craddock included recipes from well-known bartenders he worked with or knew of in America and Britain, including historical mixes. He also included recipes for popular mixed drinks he invented himself, including the Corpse Reviver (No. 2). Includes "The Lucky Hour of Great Wines", the introduction to the wine section by Colette. wear at top of spine with no loss, gt lettering on spine rubbed; very decent boards with only smaller marks on the fragile metallic printing. Apart from a very few spots of browning/marks contents are clean and bright, binding tight and very appealing. Shipping: Sturdy box and full tracking and secured. Notice I am selling a few very collectible book titles this week.
