Author: Theophilus Camden Publication: J Stratford, London 1811, some later illustrations Although the title pages in both volumes are dated 1811, the 82 splendid plates in this work are dated between about 1808 and 1817 (and include for example the Battle of Waterloo). It would appear to be an extra-illustrated copy. Most of the plates are scenes from English history and a smaller number are vignettes containing portraits of the various monarchs. They are by various hands including Robert Smirke. Volume 1: Frontispiece of Britannia, title page, i-iv, 5- 590 pages, large folding map on England and 49 other engraved plates. Volume 2: Frontispiece, title page (i/ii), ii-iv, 5- 802 (final page of main text with errata), four pedigrees, 185-820 (index to Vol 2), 31 engraved plates. Bound in contemporary full calf with marbled endpapers, boards re-attached with cloth and paper repair, head and tail of spine and corners all well worn. The text is generally very good with occasional stains, the plates have various degrees of foxing - about one third with little or none, one third with minor foxing mainly in the margins, and one third with significant foxing and/or offsetting. The map of England and Wales in Volume 1 is present. It seems there were maps of Ireland and Scotland in Volume 2 which are missing.
