Making Changes to the Game The Options Screen Game-specific settings may be customized through the options dialog box, which is accessible at any time by pressing the Spacebar, then clicking the Options button. Playing the Game It's another sunny day and the Cartown 500 is being held at the Cartown Raceway today! After talking with Redline Rick, Putt-Putt discovers he needs to accomplish a few tasks before he can enter the race, but with your help that should be no problem! When Putt-Putt finally meets all the requirements he enters the race and you control him as he speeds around the track! Win or lose, you can always race again. Putt-Putt's Task Putt-Putt needs to find four items so he can enter the race. They can all be found somewhere around Cartown. You just need to guide Putt-Putt everywhere to find them! The Controls Using the Mouse Point and click to guide Putt-Putt through this adventure! As you move the mouse around the screen, the pointer changes to reflect the type of action it will perform when clicked. A clear arrow is the standard pointer in the game. When you see the empty outline, it means that the mouse is not pointing at an object that can be activated. Pay attention when you see the pointer turn solid, like the one in this picture. It means that the object you are pointing at can be picked up, manipulated, or activated. A large arrow shows that there is more exploration to be done in the indicated direction. Just click to send Putt-Putt off in the direction of the arrow. The large pointer also shows the exit from a mini-game. Putt-Putt's Inventory Putt-Putt's inventory is visible in the dashboard on the lower right part of the game screen. Inventory Items are objects that Putt-Putt can pick up during his adventures. To use an item, just click on its picture in the interface and it will "stick" to the cursor. Now, click on the object in the current scene to use the two items together. For instance, if you want to give a brick to Mr. Fenderbender, click on it in the inventory and then click on Mr. Fenderbender. The Menu button provides a quick way to save, load or exit the game. When you click on the ignition you'll see Putt-Putt's sun visor flipped down. Click Save to save the game you're playing. Click Load to load a saved game or click quit and you'll see a dialog box asking you to confirm that you want to stop playing. Putt-Putt's Dashboard Putt-Putt's dashboard is not only used to store the special objects that he collects throughout the game, but it also has its own special click points. Click on Putt-Putt's Ignition to see the menu. Click on Putt-Putt's Horn to hear it honk. Click on Putt-Putt's Speedometer to hear him rev his engine. Click on Putt-Putt's Radio for helpful, humorous, and interesting information. Click Points There are hundreds of hidden click points in Putt-Putt Enters the Race. You can click on almost anything on the screen and make it come alive. Click on a rock, a flower or a tree and watch as the fun and surprises begin! You can also use the keys on the keyboard to activate click points. But it will be random so press a key and watch the antics of the seemingly inanimate objects onscreen! Most click points will continue to respond with each successive click, and produce a different reaction each time! Be sure to click on an item more than once. Some click points even act as mini-games - a combination of click points that work together for even more fun. Game Hints Game Paths As with most Humongous Entertainment Junior Adventures there is a random element to Putt-Putt Enters the Race. This means you will play the game once through to the end and the next time you visit you'll have a different puzzle to solve. We call these game paths. The game path will be randomly determined when the game begins. Depending on which path you're playing some of the locations, items or puzzles will be useful to solving the game and some will not. Remember to explore everywhere and just keep clicking on everything you see! Puzzlers Although Putt-Putt will have several perplexing situations to solve before completing the game, here are the solutions to some of the really tricky ones he might face. These game hints are meant to help you if you're completely stuck and just can't seem to figure out what to do next or how to use something you may have picked up. We think it takes some of the fun out of the game to know all the answers, but we realize it can be frustrating when you just can't figure out what to do next. Triangular Flag Putt-Putt needs a racing flag so he can race in the Cartown 500! The flag could be in a couple different places: If the flag is at Outback Al's you must identify the animal Al has with him and then go find out what that kind of animal likes to eat. Once you've done that, you need to locate that food and take it back to Outback Al so he can feed the baby animal. Then Putt-Putt can collect the flag. If the flag is not at Outback Al's then it will be at Mr. Fenderbender's. The trick is you won't know that until you try to help him with his cat. The cat will be hiding under the house and you'll need to find something to lure him out. When you've done that Mr. Fenderbender will try to block the hole with the flag! If you can find something else to block the hole you can keep the flag! Once you've got the flag you must find some numbers so you can put Putt-Putt's official racing number on it. Safety Helmet Putt-Putt needs a safety helmet for Pep before he can drive in the big Cartown 500! The helmet can be found in one of two places: If Mr. Fenderbender's cat, Bonzo, is stuck in the tree Putt-Putt can borrow a ladder from Smokey to rescue it after he's earned his Jr. Fire Marshal badge. Luckily Bonzo has a safety helmet on! When the cat is safe Putt-Putt can collect the safety helmet! If Mr. Fenderbender's cat, Bonzo, is not stuck in the tree the helmet will be found at the construction site. After playing the nail game, Putt-Putt will get the helmet. Super Speedy Radial Racing Tires Chuck Tow Truck has the racing tires Putt-Putt needs at his Tire Center but he's stuck on the road with a flat! Putt-Putt needs to help Chuck with that problem before he can get his tires. Once you've done that Chuck can return to the Tire Center where he'll sell Putt-Putt four Super Speedy Radial Racing tires. What a deal! Putt-Putt will only need four coins for the tires, instead of eight. Chuck gives Putt-Putt a discount for helping him. Gas Can Putt-Putt needs Hi-Powered Hi-Octane gasoline to use for the Cartown 500. He can find it at the Cartown gas station but he needs something to put it in. The gas can will be in one of two places: Mr. Crankcase has a big pile of stuff at the junkyard. If Putt-Putt helps him stack it all on the shelves he can keep the gas can. If Mr. Crankcase doesn't have the gas can, it will be a little more complicated to find! Betsy Bulldozer needs a break from her work on the construction site. If Putt-Putt can help her with that he can borrow Betsy's shovel to help Mrs. Airbag. And believe it or not, he'll end up with a gas can! Keyboard Commands Saving, Loading and Quitting the Game You no longer have to use the S and L keys for saving and loading games. And quitting games is even easier too! Now you can access these functions from a special menu and you can use the mouse. The Menu button on Putt-Putt's dashboard provides a quick way to save, load or exit the game. When you click on the ignition you'll see Putt-Putt's sun visor flipped down. Click Save to save the game you're playing. Click Load to load a saved game or click Quit and you'll see a dialog box asking you to confirm that you want to stop playing. When you click on Save you'll see the Save Game screen and the cursor will turn into a small snapshot of your game. Move the snapshot to a slot and click the mouse button, then type in a name for your game and press Enter to save the game and return or click the yellow arrow in the upper right corner. Or, use the snapshot to click the large arrow in the corner of your screen to exit without saving. When you click on Load you'll see the Load Game screen. Just click on a previously stored snapshot, and you will be returned to the game at the point you were at when the game was saved. Click the large arrow in the corner of your screen to exit without loading. When you click on Quit you'll see a dialog box asking if you're sure you want to quit. Click Yes to confirm that you want to exit the game or No and the action will be cancelled. Click the yellow arrow to the right on the visor to return to the game without doing anything. Keyboard Commands In addition to the keyboard commands below you can now use the keyboard to activate click points. Press any key and watch onscreen as flowers start playing guitar and trees blast off! You can still use the mouse too. See the Making Changes to the Game section for information on disabling this function. Pauses the game, and opens the pause dialog box. To continue, just click the Play button. Quits the game. You can also stop playing by pressing the Spacebar, then clicking the Quit button or by clicking on the ignition on Putt-Putt's dashboard and then clicking on Quit. Fast-forward through the current cutscene. Same as the key, but skips only the current character's line -- not the entire scene. Displays on-line help. TROUBLESHOOTING INFORMATION Windows 95/98 If you're having trouble with your CDROM, sound or video card make sure you've got the most updated drivers for these devices. If you're still having problems read on: CDROM To make sure your CDROM drive is set up optimally: Click on Start, Settings and Control Panel. Double click on the System icon; in the System Properties click on the Performance tab. Now click on the File System button and then the CDROM tab. Check the Optimize Access Pattern setting and make sure it accurately reflects the speed of your CDROM drive. For instance, if you have a 4x make sure it's set up "Quad-speed or higher." Also, make sure the Supplemental Cache Size is set to large for any speed CDROM drive. Now open the HEGAMES.INI file, delete the entire [My Computer] section, save the changes, close the file and run the game. This will force all the tests to rerun. NOTE: This refers to Windows 95/98 only. Contact your computer manufacturer for help with this. Printers You want to make sure you have printer drivers that support 32-bit printing. If not, you'll need to upgrade to the 32-bit printer drivers in order to print from our game. Contact HP at 208 323 2349 for more information. Video When we say SVGA, we mean that we need a display capable of supporting a resolution of 640x480 at 256 colors (this wasn't a requirement of the original VGA spec, so we say SVGA). Almost every video adapter sold in the last six+ years is capable of this resolution and color depth. Even if you don't know it, you probably have an SVGA card. NOTE: To find your system device information on Windows 95/98 or higher click on Start, Settings and Control Panel. Double click on the System icon; in the System Properties click on the Device Manager tab and then find Display Adapters and Sound, video and game controllers in the list. Click the plus sign to the left of each line and note the manufacturer name as it appears below.
