The year 1967 represented a momentous time in Canada's history. A number of celebratory events were planned including Montreal’s EXPO 67 when Canadians enthusiastically celebrated the 100th anniversary of Confederation. As part of that year-long celebration, the Royal Canadian Mint issued a unique set of Canadian coins that bore a reverse design by acclaimed artist Alex Colville. When this set was released the 1967 this Canadian proof-like set achieved a huge following not just in Canada, but also in the United States. Gold was not allowed to be owned by the American public until December 31st, 1974 when Gerald Ford lifted the ban on Americans owning gold. At that time, American coin collectors were able to buy the Canadian set but WITHOUT the gold 20 dollar coin. American dealers included an information sheet asking customers to contact their congressmen asking for the repeal on banning gold ownership. It is important to note that the Canadian mint had not produced a gold coin since 1919, and did not start producing gold again until 1976, so for a time this was the ONLY Canadian gold coin the average person had access to.
