If I was a gambling man I would bet that the plastic axle gears have cracked over the years and that is a common flaw with WALTHERS/PROTO & ATHEARN engines of this era. It is a very easy fix and will require 4 new axle gears that are sold aftermarket here on eBay using part number ATHG19254 for a complete axle and truck set or A-Line 40005 that you would need to press in. Brand new and never removed from box. Bought it brand new in the early 2000's from Scale Model Train's in St. Paul MN. Pictures are taken on my personal home layout to show that im not a dealer (just another train fanatic like yourself) and I assure you that your getting a good product because I TEST THEM for you.
