Description: IN THIS EXTREMELY RARE HANDWRITTEN LETTER HENRI de TOULOUSE-LAUTREC BRINGS TOGETHER HIS ART DEALER AND HIS LIFETIME FRIEND, BOTH OF WHICH WHOSE PORTRAIT HE PAINTEDHENRI de TOULOUSE-LAUTREC (1864-1901) Handwritten Letter Signed, “H. Lautrec”, January 20, 1896, on a carte – telegramme, 5 x 3, in pencil, to French writer and journalist, Edouard Dujardin (1861-1949) whose literary works are extensive. Toulouse-Lautrec was the French painter, printmaker, draughtsman, caricaturist, and illustrator whose immersion in the colorful and theatrical life of Paris in the late 19th century allowed him to produce a collection of enticing, elegant, and provocative images of the sometimes decadent affairs of those times. The letter is in French (with translation in English): “Joy, asks you to give me a response by Friday please.” The letter is referring to Maurice Joyant (1864-1930), who was a writer and director of an art gallery where Lautrec had an exhibition in January 1896. He was one of Lautrec’s most intimate friends whom he had known since their school days together. Lautrec included Dujardin in his 1892-93 painting “Divan Japonais” and shortly before his death painted his friend Joyant at a duck shoot. Both Dujardin and Joyant were known to frequent Parisian night life with Lautrec. This extremely rare handwritten letter is in fine condition. #13096ZIUAI Certificate of Authenticity This item has been authenticated and is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity issued by our parent company, History Makers Autographs.
