Description: Up for sale today is the 2014 release of the Japanese Hayao Miyazaki “Directed Work Collection” Blu-ray box set, which contains all of his feature films up to and including The Wind Rises. All of the films are English-language friendly, with both subs and dubs as options in addition to the original Japanese language tracks, with the exception of Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro, which is inexplicably Japanese only. The Boy and the Heron is not included in this set, but what is included is a copy of the incredibly rare promotional Blu-ray of On Your Mark, the 1995 music video Miyazaki directed for the Japanese pop duo Chage & Aska’s song of the same name. This disc was originally intended to be included in the 2014 set but was pulled right before the set’s release due to Aska’s recent prison sentencing, and although people who purchased the box set back then were able to receive a copy of the disc by mailing their proof of purchase to Studio Ghibli, fans/collectors outside of Japan (like myself) had a much more difficult time getting hold of the disc. I was lucky enough to have a family friend living in Japan at the time, and after I mailed her a postcard full of poorly scribbled Japanese (after also carrying on email correspondence with Studio Ghibli via Google Translate, which they thought was sweet despite the poor translation), along with my proof of purchase, she was able to get my disc and send it to me in the U.S. Because the story of how I got it is so special to me, I’m keeping that original 2014 promo copy, along with the note I received from Studio Ghibli thanking me for my patronage. The disc you are getting was reissued in 2024 as part of an updated box set, but I can confirm that aside from a different catalog number on the spine, it is identical to that original promo copy. Also: On Your Mark is cool as heck, and if you haven’t seen it, you’re in for a treat. Every film in the set is in mint condition, because I have babied all of these discs. There are two issues regarding condition I would like to point out, however. First, there is a small dent in one of the back corners of the box, as shown in a couple of the photos. You will likely not notice this on your shelf. Second: the informational paper that wraps around the box was ripped when I was moving this into storage recently for safe keeping (I think that’s called a Big L?) I have repaired the rip with tape and provided a photo of it, but you will likely not notice this either, if you even keep the paper. The final point I’d like to make about this item: because On Your Mark was ultimately pulled from the retail release of this set before it went on sale, the box is not actually wide enough to fit it alongside the included booklet. Because On Your Mark has historically sold for quite a bit by itself, I have chosen to put that in the set for safe keeping alongside the other films, and will wrap the booklet separately inside the package when I mail this to whoever buys it. Thank you for looking at my item today! I have over two decades of 100% positive feedback as both a buyer and a seller, and I know you’ll be happy with this set if you choose to purchase it from me. It will be fully insured for the full purchase amount, so you can also rest assured that if anything does happen to it during shipping we will both be covered. For my money, the Japanese Blu-ray releases of these films are, bar none, the best possible editions available, and while this box set does not have any film specific special features (the special features discs feature early Miyazaki work as well as his 2014 retirement press conference, all in Japanese only), it does have the best video encodes of any release across the globe. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, in particular, has never looked better than it does in this set—it was remastered to Miyazaki’s specifications specifically for this release and it is simply breathtaking to behold, particularly on a very large screen.
