The initial product offering was produced in the years from 1964 to 1969 and represented four of the branches of the US Armed Forces, the Action Soldier (Army), Action Sailor (Navy), Action Pilot (Air Force), and Action Marine (Marine Corp). The name is derived from the usage of "GI Joe" for the generic U.S. soldier. The development of the GI Joe toy line led to the coining of the term "action figure" (not a doll!). GI Joe's appeal to boys has made it an American classic among toys, having been named Toy of the Century by The Children's Museum of Indianapolis in 2012, when over 24,000 folks, young and old, voted for their favorite toy of the last century. During this enduring legacy of 60 years, GI Joe has undergone several reincarnations. One of my favorites was the Timeless Collection. GI Joe Timeless Collection was a series of released action figure and action figure sets, which included a fully poseable 12" figure (based on the Masterpiece Edition body) and very accurately reproduced accessories. Hasbro produced these sets in several different waves from 1998 to 2003, under the banner, "Timeless Collection - Reminiscent of the Golden Age of GI Joe". These sets highlighted some of the more popular GI Joe themes from the late 1960s and early 1970s. Most sets were sold as store exclusives. You are bidding on a GI Joe 12" General Robert E. Lee Civil War Series - Timeless Collection figure that was initially released in 1998 as a Walmart Store Exclusive. It was specifically released by Hasbro as part of the "Civil War Series". This historically accurate figure, not only serves as a piece of memorabilia for GI Joe collectors but also as a cultural artifact that invites discussion on history, leadership, and the portrayal of controversial figures in popular culture. What makes this piece even more desirable is the fact that this figure was part of Hasbro's pre-production, quality assurance program. This "sample" GI Joe 12" General Robert E. Lee Timeless Collection action figure has a signed Hasbro Standard Quality Assurance green tag. There are over 20 steps that a toy must go through, to get from a concept, to an actual toy that is factory produced for the consumer. This still in box item appears to be a sample of the final release. It was signed off for Hasbro Foreign (HBFE), with the signature of approval from Engineering (ENG), Quality Assurance (QA), Packaging (PKG) and Marketing (MKT). Signatures were gathered on a Hasbro Standard green tag which is scotch taped to the back of the box. During any of the steps involved in the pre-production procedure, it is not uncommon for items (prototypes) to be used in preparation of the mock up, that are not used in the final release. In this particular sample, it appears that all the accessories used were the same as the one issued with the final release, however, without further study, I can not be sure. Item is brand new and has never been removed from a decent box. There is some shelf wear including some warping and crushing, and the tape on top of box has been cut. Contents are mint, and box displays beautifully. This will make the perfect gift for any kid aged 5 years and older.
