Fernad Leger(February 4, 1881 to August 17, 1955)FrenchJoseph Fernand Henri Legar was born in Lower Normandy France his father was a cattle rancher. He trained to be an architect graduating in 1899. Move to Paris and supported himself as a architectural draftsman. After military service he applied to Ecole des- Deaux Arts (School of Decorative Arts) but was rejected. He still attended as a non-enrolled student. He describes this period as “three empty and useless years”. He started work as a painter at 25 showing the impressionism influence which he late destroyed eclipsed by drawing and geometry reminiscent of Cezanne of 1907. His works became increasingly abstract as the World War 1. His two at the front in Argonne France gave a very mechanical images, hence his mechanical period. Again his style continued evolve. In 1931he made his first trip to United States. He traveled to New York and Chicago. The Museum of Modern Art in New York had a show of his work in 1935. And he commissioned to decorate Nelson Rockefeller’s apartment. World War II saw Joseph teaching at Yale University. He returned to France in 1945 and joined the communist party, he produced works reminiscent of Social Realism. He did a lot of varied projects book illustration set and costume design and other works. He died suddenly at his home in 1955. MediumPainter, Sculptor and Filmmaker StyleCubism, Moderiernism Section d’Or Galerie MaegthGalerie Maegth was opened in Paris in 1936 by Aime Maeght and his son and wife Paule and Adrien Maeght open a second gallery in Barcelona Spain in 1956. They specialized in showing modern Spanish and Frech artists. 1964 Adrien Maeght started ARTE printing works that handled all edition for the galleries. Today is still managed by a Maeght. 1964 Aime Maeght founded the “Maeght Foundaion” a museum dedicated to modern art in Saint-Paul de Vence in southern France.. He hired Spanish architect Joeph Lluis Sert to create a space for the 12,000 piece collection. It is fully privately funded and has 200 thousand visitors per year.
