Description: This UNREAD Folio Society book and its slipcase are in NEAR PERFECT condition with no markings inside or out and no attached bookplates. There is very slight superficial wear to the spine's gilded lettering, as shown. One of Bailey's more well-known adventures occurred in 1918, when he traveled to Tashkent in Central Asia on a mission to discover the intentions of the new Bolshevik government, specifically in relation to India. During the mission, he also shadowed Raja Mahendra Pratap, an Indian nationalist who had established the Provisional Government of India in Kabul in 1915. Pratap was liaising with Germany and Bolshevik authorities for a joint Soviet-German assault into India through Afghanistan.[10] It was then that the first plans for the Soviet Kalmyk Project was first considered. Bailey eventually had to flee for his life from the city and escaped only by taking on the guise of an Austrian prisoner-of-war[11] and joining the Cheka with an assignment to find a rogue British agent, himself. Upon his return to England, he was a national hero. Bailey later recorded his exploits in his book Mission to Tashkent. Folio Society books are constructed using only high-quality materials with uncompromising methods by masters in bookmaking. All are wonderfully illustrated on gorgeous paper with deep fonts. For most people who are only familiar with generic Chinese-manufacturered, mass-produced books, the obvious quality difference is instantly revelatory. The wavy effect that may appear on fabric in multiple pictures is only "moiré pattern". It occurs when a scene or an object that is being photographed contains fine, repetitive details that exceed sensor resolution. As a result, the camera produces strange-looking wavy patterns. It is simply an effect and doesn't exist on the book in real life.
