Description: FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD by Thomas Hardy New and Cheaper Edition Published by Sampson Low, Marston, Searle & Rivington Limited, London 1889 A vintage pre-owned very early edition of Thomas Hardy's celebrated novel published in attractively floral designed boards but in poor condition. Red cloth boards with floral decor and titling on the front board and spine with plain red cloth board at the rear with the publisher logo at the centre. Design with titling in gilt is very faded at the spine, which is creased and crumpled and loosening from the block. Wear to spine ends with the inner binding strip at the spine head flapping, attached only at the front joint. Wear and loss at the spine ends. Joints rubbed. Rear joint with a couple of chips; and splits starting. Boards darkened, rubbed with mottled staining. Edge wear. Bumps with cloth fraying and peeling at the corners. Vertical creasing at the rear board. Staining - probably from damp - at the bottom front corner, evident also internally. Blue paste down with adverts present front and rear but the free end papers - (which also contained adverts) - are missing - only a tiny loose fragment remaining at the front. Yawning splits at the boards' pastedowns with webbing and binding cords exposed. At the front only the central binding cord is still holding. Boards very slack. Front matter and first few pages loose with subsequent early pages loosening. Lengthy tear at the hinge on pp 3/4. Cracked hinges internally make the block slack and somewhat fragile to handling. Some edge wear to pages. Internally pages are toned and there are marks, smudges and stains here and there, though overall the pages are predominantly clean. So somewhat fragile and not by any means in the best of shape. But still a significant and fairly uncommon early edition of Hardy's famous novel and collectable, despite its condition. pp vii, 407.
