Description: Rhynchonopsis (abbreviated Rhnps.) Tutti Fruiti is an intergeneric hybrid that was registered in 1988. This population is a remake using new and better species parents. We are head over heels excited to release two extraordinary clones of this unusual intergeneric hybrid. This trend in breeding Rhynchostylis gigantea with Phals including novelty Phals is really exciting and producing amazing plants. The pod parent, Phal. Little One, is Phal. hygrochila x Phal. japonica (formerly classified as Sedirea japonica). Rhynchostylis gigantea is an epiphytic species native to southeast Asia. It is a vandaceous orchid with arching spikes that are covered in ¾ to 1 inch flowers. It usually flowers in January to February, and the flowers can last for about 2–3 months and has a distinct spicy fragrance. There are several color forms of Rhynchostylis gigantea including red, orange, peach, alba, purple, and cartoon. The clone 'Butterfly' has best traits of all species in its ancestry. The leaves resemble Phal. japonica, having soft, jade-green, erect leaves. It is compact, floriferous, and free blooming, has heavy flower substance, long-lasting blooms, and fragrant. Rhnps. Tutti Fruiti ‘Butterfly’ has a fragrance that is slightly citrusy from the Phal. japonica. It can be grown in a pot, hanging basket, or mounted. Excellent for growing under lights, on a window sill, or in an orchid cabinet. Can be grown alongside novelty Phals and Cattleyas. Rhnps. Tutti Fruiti 'Sapphire' (Item # MC2860) is our other clone, which has greater influence from Phal. Little One—the flowers are heavily spotted. Buy them both for comparison. Highly recommended. Get to know your growerNorman Fang oversees all of the growing at our nursery. Norman received his degree in Ornamental Horticulture from California State Polytechnic University in Pomona in 1988. While still a student, he managed the Raymond Burr Orchid Collection on campus. He received two scholarships to study plant tissue culture that also allowed him to study under Dr. Murashige at the University of California and Dr. Tanabe at the University of Hawaii. In addition, he was honored in 2005 with the Distinguished Alumni Award from the School of Agriculture at Cal Poly in Pomona. In 1986, Norman started his renowned nursery, Norman's Orchids, based in both California and Taiwan. His parents, brother and sister soon joined him in the company as it grew. As the second youngest American Orchid Society (AOS) Judge to become fully accredited at that time, Norman has traveled extensively around the world to judge numerous orchid shows. In 1996, with Paul Bechtel, he initiated AOS Judging at the Taiwan International Orchid Show and since then has served as the AOS Judging Coordinator for the show. He has also long served as the AOS Representative for the Taiwan Orchid Growers Association. Norman has served as Past Vice President of the American Orchid Society and also regularly volunteers for them. Lastly Norman Fang has acquired over 400 Flower Quality Awards from the American Orchid Society for his outstanding orchids.
