The world's first Super Audio CD hybrid. ■Karajan, the pioneer of recording media in the 20th centuryHerbert von Karajan (1908-1989) was a pioneer who had an unchanging passion for recording records throughout his life, and he left behind a huge number of recordings, from the SP era to digital recordings. In this series, we have reproduced many of Karajan's masterpieces recorded on various labels and at various times. His achievements in elevating the packaged media of discs into true works of art for musicians, including the selection of repertoire, the ideal microphone settings and mixing for each recording venue, and easy-to-understand jacket images, are truly significant. The album we will be featuring in this series is a popular orchestral piece by two French composers recorded in the early 1970s. ■ Selection and packaging of music with the record medium in mind What is distinctive about Karajan's discography is that he did not record familiar repertoire that he had performed many times in concerts, but rather he recorded pieces that were popular on disc regardless of the actual concerts. Bizet's opera Carmen was an opera that Karajan liked to perform at opera houses and music festivals, and the suite from this opera and the two suites from Les Amours, also composed by Bizet, were repertoires that were selected to fit the medium of LP records. Karajan first recorded these three pieces in 1958 when he was still with EMI, and the LP record, which used Van Gogh's oil painting of the Arles landscape on the cover, was highly praised and became an instant bestseller. Hoping to repeat that success, Karajan and Deutsche Grammophon recorded the three pieces in the closing stages of December 1970, during a break in rehearsals for Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 for the New Year's Eve concert, and the album, with its cover featuring a photograph of the remains of the famous Pont Saint-Bénézet in Avignon, quickly became a staple of the analog era. The suite, which features four colorful, highly contrasting pieces, is a sort of orchestral showcase, in which Karajan shows off the full palette of tones and dynamism of the Berlin Philharmonic. There are so many highlights to listen to, such as the intermezzo to the third act of Carmen, the adagio of the first suite of Les Amours, the gentle emotion of the minuet of the second suite, the dignified presence of the pastorale and intermezzo of the second suite of Les Amours, and the meticulously calculated progression of the Farandole and the dramatic crescendo. The highlight is that the saxophone solos in the prelude of the first suite of Les Amours and the intermezzo of the second suite are performed not by members of the Berlin Philharmonic but by the virtuoso French saxophone Daniel Deffayet (1922-2002). ■The Berlin Philharmonic's exquisite orchestrationGounod's Faust ballet music and waltz were recorded the month after Bizet's session, coupled with an excerpt from Offenbach's Les Joys de Paris, and released with a famous print by Lautrec on the cover. This Gounod-Offenbach coupling is actually a re-recording of a best-selling record recorded by EMI in 1958. The focus is not on ballet music for dancing, but on the fascinating orchestration with its ever-changing colors and rhythms. It is truly exhilarating to watch the Berlin Philharmonic, with their virtuoso technique, perform it so earnestly and effortlessly and vividly. Karajan was able to turn Gounod's simple and clear orchestral writing to sound with unparalleled precision, but apart from the ballet music and waltz from Faust, he only recorded Mephistopheles' aria from Faust and Ave Maria, and it is a pity that he did not record any operas or other orchestral pieces. ■Recorded at the Jesus Christ Church, which has produced many famous recordingsThe session took place at the Jesus Christ Church in the Dahlem district of Berlin, a suburb of Berlin that was a standard location for recording the Berlin Philharmonic in the stereo era. This church, which was completed in 1933, was discovered by Deutsche Grammophon in the late 1940s after the main concert halls where orchestras such as the Philharmonic could hold concerts were reduced to ashes during bombing during World War II, and the Titania Palast, where the Berlin Philharmonic and other orchestras held concerts, was highly occupied and acoustically unsuitable for recording, so it began to be used as a venue for recording records. Since then, it has been used for a variety of recordings in Berlin, from soloists to operas. Although it has some problems with shielding, the church's great advantages are that it has a high ceiling, rich resonance, and the ability to record a truly deep and lustrous sound. Since Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic's first contract with Deutsche Grammophon in 1959 with "A Hero's Life," most of the pair's DG recordings in Berlin were made in this church until the early 1970s, and even in this recording of Bizet and Gounod, the skill of veteran Günter Hermanns, who could be called the face of Deutsche Grammophon in the analog era, has captured the rich sound of the Berlin Philharmonic in a broad, bird's-eye view (the somewhat extreme mixing that aimed to emphasize the string parts, which became noticeable in the late 1970s when the recording venue was completely moved to the Philharmonic, has not yet been adopted). The four tracks on this disc were released on CD in 1989 - Karajan digitally recorded the same three Bizet tracks (with Deffayet as the soloist) in 1983, which was released on CD first, so the release of this analog recording was delayed a little - and it has been a staple of the catalog since then, but this is the first time it has been released as a Super Audio CD hybrid. As in the past, no compromises were made from the selection of the master to be used to the final DSD mastering process. In particular, "Esoteric Mastering" was used for the DSD mastering. The carefully tuned Master Sound Discrete DAC and Master Sound Discrete Clock, Esoteric's top-of-the-line equipment, were used. In addition, the generous use of MEXCEL cables allowed the information of the original master to be transferred to disc with a smooth sound.
