Description: In 1969, created in Italy by Elah Chewing Gum in collaboration with Disney, these Scrooge Dollar$ were issued in $, 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, 1,000, 5,000, and 10,000 denominations. These bank notes featured the members of the Donald Duck family and are from the imaginary Banca di Paperopoli (Bank of Duckburg). Before the Pepsi Stuff marketing campaign introduced Pepsi Points to the world, there were Scrooge Dollar$ by Elah. This was a very successful marketing campaign between Elah Chewing Gum and Disney in Italy from 1969-1972. Every piece of bubble gum, also known as ‘rubbers’ or ‘butts’ in Italy due to the loss in translation, was wrapped in a Scrooge Dollar. Scrooge Dollar$ were a laminated wrapper in the form of a bank note measuring 3”x1.5”. The values varied and every wrapper had a value. If it wasn’t a winner of another piece of bubble gum, you could collect and save up the face values. For 150 Lire and 10 Scrooge Dollars, you could become a member of the Bank of Duckburg! This got you a membership card, monthly newsletter, and the chance to win monthly prizes. You could also buy prizes with your Scrooge Dollar$. The left side of the notes display either, “Non Hai Vinto! Ritenta” translated to “You Didn’t Win! Try again” or “Vinci Un Bubble Gum” translated to “Win a Bubble Gum.” These notes were "minted" in 1969, 1971, and 1972. The 1969 notes were distributed in 1970, which is why there were none produced with a 1970 stamp.
