Description: Easton Press leather edition of Hiller B. Zobel's "The Boston Massacre," a COLLECTOR'S edition, one of the LIBRARY OF AMERICAN HISTORY series, published in 1987. Bound in blue leather, the book has decorative paper end leaves, satin book marker, gold gilt on three edges---in near FINE condition. NOTES FROM HISTORY is included. Hiller B. Zoebel, born in 1932, is a Retired Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of Massachusetts and a 1953 graduate of HARVARD. "The Boston Massacre" describes Boston in 1770 in what Zobel terms "a powder keg ready to explode"--which it did on March 5. Fired by a series of street clashes with British troops and fueled to even greater frenzy by the recent murder of a young boy, a small crowd began harassing British troops. The Redcoats opened fire, and when the smoke cleared from their muskets, three colonists were dead and eight other wounded. The Boston massacre became a pivotal link in the chain that made revolution inevitable. First had come the installation of an inept governor by the British. Then a series of new taxes demonstrated the British government's greed for even higher revenues from the Colonies. But the greatest affront of all was the stationing of British troops in Boston. The Redcoats' presence was a stinging reminder to the Colonists that they were second class citizens, subjects to the whims of Parliament and the King. Boston troops were organized by SAMUEL ADAMS. The bloodshed on King Street ignited the spark of liberty that burst forth five years later at Lexington and Concord. Zobel spent his life in the Boston area and became a leading authority on American Revolutionary and Colonial History. "Boston Massacre" received the Littleton-Griswold Prize, given for the best published work on the legal history of America by the Colonial period to 1900. Zobel's book was based on a wealth of documentary records. 372 pages, including an index. I offer combined shipping.
