Description: Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Maria Johnson aged 7 - 1823. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout, the moreso when one considers Maria was just seven years old when she completed it. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a central bird to the top edge flanked by two flower baskets, a floral motif and a rosebush with a foliate edged plaque beneath containing the following verse JESUS permit thy gracious name too (to) standAs the first effort of an infant's hand And as her fingers o'er the canvas moveEngage her tender thoughts to seek thy loveWith thy dear children may she share a partAnd write they LAW upon her heart The plaque has a hovering cherub, floral motifs, crowns and a bird in flight to each side and a central rosebud below which has a floral medallion, rosebud, fruit basket, floral urn and tree to its left and right. The middle section of the linen contains an exquisitely worked flower basket with birds, a fruit basket and fruit bush to each side with an additional cluster of flowers beside the fruit bush on the left. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a delightful two storey house with three attic windows in its roof which has two windmills above. The house has a set of railings and a tree to its right, a small dog to the left, both with a carnation basket beside them whilst the following advise is stitched across the linen beneath - Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it. Instruct youth in time. Maria's details and the date of September 11th 1823 run across the bottom edge of the linen then the whole piece is surrounded by a strawberry border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with areas of grubbiness, moreso down the left side and partially across the lower section. There are also a couple of small areas of damage to the lower left quadrant and one is able to see through these that the sampler is sitting on a later, clean backing cloth. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within its seemingly original ebonised frame which is in good condition with scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age. PLEASE NOTE - This is a fairly large sampler measuring 17 1/2" x 19 1/4" (sight size) and 21 1/4" x 23" including the frame. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO MENTION THAT I HAVE USED A RELATIVELY NEW CAMERA TO TAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH THE COLOUR BALANCE (something I'm STILL continuing to work on!!) AS SUCH, SOME OF MY PHOTOS HAVE A SLIGHTLY FIERY OR YELLOWISH LOOK TO THEM WHICH IS NOT THE CASE, IT'S JUST MY INCOMPETENCE! PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SAMPLER ITSELF. ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK. ALSO PLEASE CHECK OUT THE OTHER SAMPLERS I'M SELLING. I AM HAPPY TO COMBINE POSTAGE ON MULTIPLE PURCHASES.PLEASE NOTE - THIS ITEM IS LOCATED IN THE UK BUT CAN BE SHIPPED TO THE LOCATIONS TICKED IN THE INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING SECTION. SHIPPING WILL BE VIA PARCELFORCE OR FEDEX - FULLY TRACKED DELIVERY TO THE USA WITHIN FIVE WORKING DAYS.PLEASE NOTE - I WILL DOUBLE TAPE THE GLASS & PACK THE SAMPLER EXTREMELY WELL, BUT DUE TO ITS SIZE I CANNOT GUARANTEE AGAINST THE POSSIBILITY OF THE GLASS BEING DAMAGED DURING TRANSIT. IF THE BUYER WOULD PREFER FOR IT TO BE REMOVED, I AM HAPPY TO DO SO.
