Description: Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Charlotte Batt - 1838. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a central fruit basket with a crown above and a flower basket, floral motif and rose stem to each side. The middle section of the linen is stitched with a central tied floral garland containing Charlotte's name and the date of A.D.1838 with a blossom tree to each side, both with a fleur-de-lys above. There is a small fruit basket below the garland with a crown, heart and bird on a leafy branch to its left and right, both birds with a fruit bowl and floral motif beside them. The lower section of the linen is stitched with an expanse of grass with a large and exquisitely worked flower basket to the centre overflowing with a variety of flowers both in bud and full bloom, all surrounded by lush foliage. The basket has a fleur-de-lys near its side blooms and a dog and floral motif to both sides of the basket its left, then the whole piece is surrounded by a honeysuckle border, partially obscured by the mat inside the frame. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, darker to the field and paler around the edges, also across the middle from where the sampler has been over a stretcher at some point of time. There are areas of minor undulation which are not as noticeable as on the photos which have been taken under a harsh light. There is a small area of damage to the lower right corner of the linen and one is able to see through this that the sampler is sitting on a similar coloured backing cloth. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is also a small amount of minor bleeding to some of the green stitch work. The sampler is contained within a late 19th century oak frame with gilt slip and sage green card mat. All are in good condition with the slip retaining much of its original gilding and the frame with some light scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age. Measures 11" x 14 1/2" (sight size) and 17 1/2" x 22" including the frame. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO MENTION THAT I HAVE USED A RELATIVELY NEW CAMERA TO TAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH THE COLOUR BALANCE (something I'm STILL continuing to work on!!) AS SUCH, SOME OF MY PHOTOS HAVE A SLIGHTLY FIERY OR YELLOWISH LOOK TO THEM WHICH IS NOT THE CASE, IT'S JUST MY INCOMPETENCE! PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SAMPLER ITSELF. ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK. ALSO PLEASE CHECK OUT THE OTHER SAMPLERS I'M SELLING. I AM HAPPY TO COMBINE POSTAGE ON MULTIPLE PURCHASES.PLEASE NOTE - THIS ITEM IS LOCATED IN THE UK BUT CAN BE SHIPPED TO THE LOCATIONS TICKED IN THE INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING SECTION. SHIPPING WILL BE VIA PARCELFORCE OR FEDEX - FULLY TRACKED DELIVERY TO THE USA WITHIN FIVE WORKING DAYS.PLEASE NOTE - I WILL DOUBLE TAPE THE GLASS & PACK THE NEEDLEPOINT EXTREMELY WELL, BUT DUE TO ITS SIZE I CANNOT GUARANTEE AGAINST THE POSSIBILITY OF THE GLASS BEING DAMAGED DURING TRANSIT. IF THE BUYER WOULD PREFER FOR IT TO BE REMOVED, I AM HAPPY TO DO SO.
