Description: [zipedit] DenmarkFundraising / Propaganda Poster Stamp This poster stamp was issued in 1919 by Danmarks Samfundet.According to danmarks-samfundet.dk: The foundation in 1908 took place during a period marked by the international tension before the First World War and by national political struggles. This led a circle of citizens to form the Danish Society with the main purpose of strengthening national unity. A very important decision was made already at the founding meeting, when it was decided that the work should take place on an apolitical basis, as was natural around the national symbol Dannebrog. After 4 years of intense work, the organization had become nationwide, and at the same time the idea arose to start an annual national fundraiser on June 15, which was also called Valdemarsdag, just as the small flag that was sold was named Valdemarsflaget, as it is still called. Permission to do so was granted by King Christian X in 1912. Danmarks Samfundet issued a poster stamp to raise funds and awareness for the Sønderjyske Fond (South Jutlanders' Fund) during the period leading up to the Reunification plebiscite in Slesvig (Schleswig). According to the Danish State Archives: The Sønderjydske Fond was established in 1918/19 to provide financial and humanitarian support to Sønderjyders, who were affected by the effects after the First World War, especially war participants, war invalids and survivors of the fallen. Support was provided for Danish culture in the border country with new church bells, establishment and support for orphanages, including the Ehlershjemmet near Vilstrup, establishment of dormitories, financial support for students from South Jutland and distribution of confirmation clocks to children of fallen war participants. A total of approx. 13 mio. kr., of which approx. 20% south of the border. The foundation was officially closed down in 1937, but a replacement committee existed until 1947 and a resolution committee until 1957. This poster stamp depicts the society's official emblem: an ancient Danish warrior holding the Dannebrog (Danish Flag) and protecting a woman and child. The warrior's shield depicts the two lions, symbol of Sønderjylland. This stamp is listed in A. Hartvigsen's "Illustreret Katalog 1885-1920 over Jule-, Velgørenheds- og Foreningsmærker samt Udstillings- og Lejlighedsmærker fra Danmark, Island, Dansk Vestindien, Sønderjylland, Norge, Sverige og Finland" as 1919 - # 6. It is also listed in Dr. Erik Begtrup’s ”Fortegnelse over Velgørenhedsmærker” in section VIII - Nationale Mærker - as # 23. This example is F/VF, OG, NH. Approximate Image Size: 32 x 51 mm. * STOCK IMAGE DUE TO RECENT NON-DELIVERY CLAIMS - EXTRA FEES FOR SHIPPING MAY BE REQUIRED FOR SOME ADDRESSES. Please inquire if you have any questions. After 35+ years I decided to retire from being an active Cinderella Stamp dealer. Most of my working inventory plus backup stock was sold at public auction. However, I have retained some material that I will be offering for sale. In addition, I have some "new" material that was mixed into lots I have bought for my own collections. I will be listing some of the material in my eBay store at fixed prices. I will also be offering some material at auction, either as single items or mixed lots. There will be many bargains available. There will be large and small lots, some containing similar material, some containing a random mixture, and some containing only one or a few items. The condition will be mixed, but none of the lots will be just accumulations of damaged or faulty stamps (unless specifically listed as such). Items in stockpage or larger lots may be removed and repackaged into glassines to save on shipping costs. A Note about Poster Stamps and Gum: Because many poster stamp collectors are primarily interested in the image on the stamp, the absence or presence of gum on the back is of little concern. If no mention of gum is made, then there may or may not be gum present. If you are only interested in poster stamps with original gum, please inquire before bidding. Actual condition issues (that are not apparent from the scan) WILL be described. * A Note about "Stock Images": Occasionally I will have more than one example of an item in inventory. Rather than scan each one individually, I may use the same image for multiple examples of the item. If that is the case, the item supplied will be in substantially the same, or better, condition than the image. Any such items will have the words: "STOCK IMAGE" at the end of the description.
