Description: Rare original antique print from an 1870s illustrated journal. It depicts the city of Famagusta Cyprus. Prominent in the picture is the Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque. Below the picture is a long article on Famagusta.Famagusta (Ammochostos, Magusa, or Gazimagusa) is a city on the east coast of Cyprus. It is located east of Nicosia and possesses the deepest harbour of the island. The Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque Camii, originally known as the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas and later as the Saint Sophia (Ayasofya) Mosque of Magusa, is the largest medieval building in Famagusta, Cyprus. Built between 1298 and c. 1400, it was consecrated as a Catholic cathedral in 1328. The cathedral was converted into a mosque after the Ottoman Empire captured Famagusta in 1571 and it remains a mosque to this day. From 1954 the building has taken its name from Lala Mustafa Pasha, the Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire from Sokolovici in Bosnia, who served Murat III and led Ottoman forces against the Venetians in Cyprus. The print is very large (folio size), measuring approximately 11 x 15 inches (28 x 38 cm). The picture fills about half of it, measuring approximately 8.4 x 10 inches, with a caption below it. The page is in excellent condition for its age. There is text/photos on the back of the print. See scan for an accurate view of the condition. This print will come with a Certificate of Authenticity.
