The cross Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice is a decoration of the Holy See, also known as the "Cross of Honor" The medal was established by Leo XIII on July 17, 1888, to commemorate his golden sacerdotal jubilee and was originally bestowed on those who aided, promoted, or otherwise assisted in making the jubilee and the Vatican Exposition successful. Today it is awarded for distinguished service to the Catholic Church. The obverse depicts the Apostles Saint Peter and Saint Paul. The left side has the wording Pro Ecclesia (For Church) and the right side Et Pontifice (And Pope). At the point of the top arm of the cross is the coat of arms of the reigning Pope. At the points of the other arms are small Greek crosses. Below the Saints is the Latin name of Pope John Paul II. The medal is in wonderful vintage condition with some wear. The ribbon has some what looks like light bleeding from fabric in the box. The box has some wear and a missing hinge on back as shown. Box is 7" x 5.25" and the medal with ribbon is about 5" tall and medal 2" at its widest. Items I sell are not new. They have been used so do not expect mint condition unless otherwise noted.
