Lawrence County was established on January 11, 1875, and organized in 1877. It was named in honor of "Colonel" John Lawrence, who became the county's first treasurer in 1877. Before his role in Lawrence County, Lawrence had served in the Dakota Territorial Legislature, as Sergeant at Arms for the United States House of Representatives, and as a U.S. Marshal for the Dakota Territory. After retiring, he continued to contribute to the community as a county road supervisor and election judge.
