Battery and Charging Information: The flashlight battery will arrive partially discharged and should be fully charged prior to use. The light can be recharged with the included Wall Charger. Simply unscrew the back of the flashlight, remove the battery, and insert into the charger with +/- facing the correct direction. Then plug it in! While the battery is low the LED on the charger will be red. When the battery is fully charged, the LED turns a solid green and the battery should be removed from the charger. Reinstall and start luminescing your specimens! Notice: UV is harmful to the eyesight of all living creatures. The use of UV-blocking eye protection is strongly recommended. UV lights should be only used by adults or under adult supervision, with proper instruction and knowledge. UV lights should be used to illuminate objects only. What makes minerals fluorescent? Ultraviolet light is a form of electromagnetic radiation. Fluorescence occurs when electrons in certain atoms of a crystallized mineral absorb the radiated energy from a UV light (Photons). The incoming photons bump the electrons into higher energy states, and they respond to the ultraviolet light. The remaining light energy is out of balance and remitted and can be seen as a visible color. The reason for the fluorescent remitted colors is due to impurities in the mineral, or activators; which become part of the mineral?s chemistry by taking the place of atoms in the host mineral. A majority of activators are atoms of certain metal elements that cause the resulting fluorescence in a mineral, Manganese being the most common activator. The level of fluorescence depends on the percentage of the impurities in relationship to the host atoms. Too much/little, results in low or no fluorescent response.
