Carefully align the pins of our Bypass Plug, and slowly insert it into the port where the Control Pod (now removed) previously connected at the rear of the subwoofer/amp. Then, connect your computer's audio output via a cable with a 1/8" (3.5mm) male stereo TRS (tip-ring-sleeve) plug to the input jack on the Bose amp (labeled "From Computer"). Your computer is now directly connected to the Bose system without the Control Pod in the circuit. The Bose Companion 3 system is now ready to be used just like a standard audio amp/speaker system! You will now use your computer's or source's volume control to adjust the Bose system's volume. Note: If using the Companion system with your TV, be sure to set the audio output setting in your TV menu to Variable instead of Fixed. Not many people know about this trick, but once it is pointed out, it becomes a powerful tool for all audio systems. When the power cable plug is oriented one way, the audio will have more compressed dynamics and a more narrow soundfield (although it may at first sound like there's more height), with more harshness on the highs. Music will sound more boring and sometimes uninteresting. With the power cable plug flipped the other way, the dynamics are more punchy with a deeper soundfield depth and more separation between instruments (easier to "localize"). Vocals sound more real, and highs are smooth - you can listen to the music at a louder volume level without it being obnoxious and distracting. The other variable you can tune is the signal cable! You can flip the orientation of this as well and observe the same changes as above. Try to visualize the musical image being played as you experiment with both configurations for the power cable and signal cable, and you'll be able to find the orientations which are more pleasing on the ears and also draws you into the music in a more holographic way. If you have the Bypass Plug already installed, hearing these differences between is much easier, and the improvements are more drastic! As a plus when using the Bypass Plug, omitting the Control Pod has a strong sonic advantage: the length of the signal travel is now greatly reduced, and the sound quality is immediately improved in terms of realism, depth, and smoothness. Further, we have actually designed this Bypass Plug with sound quality in mind (as that was our initial goal). After many hours of listening tests, we arrived at specific materials and techniques to improve realism, dimension, and a more cohesive tone overall. After installing this Bypass Plug, you may find instruments and vocals sound more realistic and captivating. In our auditioning, the Bypass Plug significantly eliminates some of the boomy/smeared, undefined bass frequencies that previously annoyed us, while also improving detail that was being masked before.
