Bartenstein, a trusted member of the 43rd Virginia Battalion, of the famous Mosby Rangers; led by Col. John S. Mosby. This item is fresh from an estate sale containing many Fauquier County, Virginia documents. This tax document came from Lt. William L. Ficklin’s estate and belonged to him and was signed by Bartenstein, as the County clerk. Ficklin was a member of the famous Black Horse Cavalry (Co. H, 4th Virginia Cavalry {Gen. Jeb Stuart). Mosby's Cavalry Regiment, formerly the 43rd Battalion, was organized in December 1864. The battalion was formed in June 1863, with five companies, but was later increased to eight. The unit served behind Federal lines in Northern Virginia and was the most effective command of its kind. The enemy forces were never safe, and the area became known as "Mosby's Confederacy". Andrew Reinhardt Bartenstein Biography Born on October 2, 1847, in Fauquier County, Virginia Died on December 19, 1916, in Warrenton, Virginia In August of 1864, at the age of sixteen, Andrew (Reinhardt) joined Company C, 43rd Battalion, Virginia Cavalry known as Mosby's Rangers under Capt. NOTE: The signature and tax receipt are authentic, but the photo images and other supporting documents are copies. Thanks for looking and good luck bidding.
