In August 1861 he enlisted in the 25th Illinois infantry regiment. In the first battle, Pea Ridge he was shot twice, but not seriously. His two flesh wounds healed quickly He continued in the army and saw action in many battles; Shiloh, Stones River, Vicksburg, Missionary Ridge and Chattanooga. At Chattanooga he was shot in the shoulder and spent four months recovering. The soldier was lucky not to have lost his army and life. In 1864 he returned to the regiment and saw action at Chickamauga. and later in the Atlanta campaign. On September 5th 1864, due to poor health on account of his earlier wounds he decided not to re-enlist and was mustered out. .
