Description: Fruita was founded in 1880 by Mormon settlers and first named "Junction". It later became known as "Fruita" in 1902 because of extensive orchards planted by the early settlers that were thriving there. Sadly the town was abandoned in 1955 when the NPS purchased the land to include in Capitol Reef National Park. The orchards, numbering about 2500 trees, are tended and preserved today by the Park.
