c.1892 James G Blaine Republican Party Protectionism Campaign Broadside Antique

Description: This is a rare Republican Party political broadside which I believe was issued in support of James G. Blaine’s 1892 presidential campaign or possibly other Republican campaigns in 1894. This broadside is printed one side only and measures about 38” x 24” and prints text of a speech made by Blaine in October 1890 under the headlines: PROPHETIC WORDS of Hon. JAS. G. BLAINE UTTERED OCTOBER, 1890 - Read Them in the Light of Present-Day Experience, and See if They Are not Being Fulfilled to the Letter by the Action of the Democratic Party now in Power. This broadside attacking Free Trade and promoting Protectionism is apparently aimed at a labor or trade union audience. This 1890 speech by Blaine was widely printed in newspapers in the months leading up to the 1894 midterm elections and was also quoted by Democrat candidate William Jennings Bryan in this 1896 presidential campaign. This is a scarce broadside as a Worldcat search locates no copies and none are traced at auction. This may be the only copy extant. This antique original broadside has some chips and nicks on the edges and a small area of paper loss near the upper right-hand corner not affecting the text block. This broadside has a few short tears on the edges and a longer jagged tear with minimal loss of paper on both the bottom edge and right edge. A former owner applied numerous pieces of tape to the back. This rare undocumented 19th century Republican Party broadside would benefit from restoration and backing but we are selling it as found.
