Description: C.1850 Swiss Enamel Antique Ring featuring Girl in Traditional Dress Antique Swiss Enamel Ring featuring Girl in Traditional Dress from Bern. Fascination with Swiss regional clothing came about in the 19th century, when Franz Niklaus König (1765-1832) published for the first time a series of 24 large engravings of couples in regional costumes. Switzerland is divided into cantons, each with its own distinct language, religion and clothing. König continued to edit his engravings, including more costumes from additional cantons between 1801 and 1820. Starting with the British, Switzerland became one of the world's first tourist destinations and with it was born thé souvenir industry. These engravings subsequently became enormously popular with tourists and visitors to Switzerland in the 19th century. The Swiss jewelers, watchmakers and enamelers, particularly located in Geneva, seized upon this trend and started to produce enameled jewelry that featured representations of these traditional costumes. This delicate 1850 ring features a girl dressed in the traditional costume from Bern, one of the most popular, in enamel and set in an 14kt Gold ring. The enamel is impeccable and the ring can be sized. US size 5.5 PLEASE MESSAGE ME BEFORE BUYING THANK YOU
